The Benefits of Nature
The core human connection to nature, specifically exposure and proximity to plant life, significantly improves productivity, enhances creativity and can increase employee engagement. There is a growing body of published research supporting these findings:
-
Employees working in an office setting have been found to report higher wellbeing and job satisfaction. The same study also found that employees who worked in view of parks or outdoor greenery also reported higher job satisfaction. Read the study here.
-
A global study of 6700 office employees found that individuals working in offices with indoor plants and nature-inspired elements reported 15% higher levels of creativity and wellbeing and 6% higher productivity. Read the report on biophilic design here.
-
A peer-reviewed study of young adults found that interaction with plants may reduce both mental stress and bodily stress. Read the full study here.
-
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 16 studies showed that interaction with indoor plants can promote healthy blood pressure and academic achievement. Read the study here.
-
A systematic review of more than 40 studies found that increased exposure to greenspace, like parks, and trees, in one’s neighborhood was associated with fewer annual diagnoses and symptoms of depression. Read the study here.
What are DBT and CBT
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based intervention that addresses unhelpful thoughts and behaviors and their impact on emotions. CBT focuses on teaching skills to monitor our unhelpful thoughts, unproductive actions, and bodily sensations to change them to positively impact how we feel.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based intervention that can improve emotional regulation through several strategies, including mindfulness and engaging in positive experiences.
PsychBotanica utilizes CBT- and DBT-based skills to increase bodily and cognitive awareness to improve mental wellbeing, satisfaction, and productivity.
You can read more about CBT and DBT below:
-
A meta-analysis of over 100 studies has supported the efficacy of CBT in treating mental health diagnoses and general stress. Read the complete study here.
-
DBT is supported by the evidence to treat a number of clinical diagnoses, however, including DBT-based skills and mindfulness practices has also been shown to reduce overall stress, anxiety and depression in the general population.
-
A study that used a 2-week nature-based intervention during work hours found that employees reported reduced stress and improved cognitive functioning. This study supports the idea that including nature-based activities with evidence-based skills that are known to support mental wellbeing and stress reduction can have positive impacts on daily working life. CBT skills can be used to reduce workplace burnout and fatigue caused by stress. These skills may include setting realistic expectations, reducing rumination, or changing beliefs to be more accurate or helpful. Read the study here.
